Michael, this is one of my first attempts at a detailed critique. I found this parallel engaging and it raised many mixed emotions that were just below my consciousness. I wanted to share some thoughts and hope you’ll indulge me.

    The left ku:

    juniper smell
    denying himself
    god

Since juniper is associated with fertility in mythology, I got two distinct POVs: the author overcome with desire turning away from god or god denying himself some form of release.

    The right ku:

    first snow
    a spear strikes
    the dancer

With the coming of winter, the celebrations of spring and summer come to an end abruptly and violently.

The combined ku (which I can’t figure out how to format) gives me the previous concepts and now includes ‘god the dancer’ or the trickster god inherent in most cultural mythologies. Here is a god who denies a part of himself so he can experience a new the seasons he created.

Thanks for sharing this work. 😊

Really appreciate the critique and insight, Ray. You've hit a lot of the intentional themes on the head. One of the things I try to do too is create a mood with the themes and words. I like to think of it as brushstrokes and I attempt to first and foremost create a mood or feeling before semantics. Still learning and trying to get it.
