    walking beside
    a fence I used
    to climb
    thirty years
    and sixty pounds ago

    Atlas Poetica 34

    a basement
    filled with
    yesteryear
    I meet my kids
    through their toys

    Skylark 6.2

    the ranger
    discusses invasive
    species
    I pause to examine
    my European roots

    Atlas Poetica 31

    cross-country skis
    slide through powdered snow —
    the path
    I might have taken
    in a parallel life

    Presence 61

    smudged
    across my fingers
    the ink I thought
    would become
    my best poem

Here are a few monolinear (one line) tanka, with periods (not used for punctuation but to show the fiveness, the five thought-parts of tanka). these one line tanka are a nod of respect to Japanese tanka that is usually written as one vertical line of script; and also as a nod of respect to Professor Hiroaki Sato who feels that tanka and haiku are one line poems.
