Thanks Pris. I recommend anyone looking for tanka prose to read the diary of Murasaki Shikibu or Lady Daibu, the courtly diaries were the form inspiration for Basho’s later travel diaries, where he replaced the tanka with haiku. the Tosa Diary is interesting in that it is a fictional account based on the author’s experience, but it is told from the perspective of an old woman rather than the man who wrote it. So even classical tanka prose could be fictional!
