Biography
Ph.D., Poetics & Depth Psychology, Professor, Graduate School of Social and Cultural Sciences, Department of English Literature, Kumamoto University, founded the Kon Nichi Translation Group in 2002. Recent books on haiku theory and criticism include Poetry as Consciousness: Haiku Forests, Space of Mind, and an Ethics of Freedom (Keibunsha, 2018, 304 pp.), awarded the 2019 Haiku Society of America Award for Prose, and The Disjunctive Dragonfly (Red Moon Press, 2013, 132 pp.), awarded the Mildred Kanterman Memorial Book Award, Haiku Society of America and Touchstone 2013 Distinguished Book Award, The Haiku Foundation. Translation activities include four volumes on Kaneko Tohta, awarded the Touchstone Award for Distinguished Criticism (2011, 2012); his first book on haiku theory, Poems of Consciousness: Contemporary Japanese & English language Haiku in Cross-cultural Perspective (Red Moon Press, 2008, 306 pp.), received the Haiku Society of America 2009 Mildred Kanterman Award for Haiku Criticism and Poetry. His bilingual edition of Presents of Mind (Red Moon Press, 2006) was awarded the 2007 Mildred Kanterman Award for International Collaboration; he was a consulting co-translator of Gasenshū: The Systematic Compilation of Kōans in Zen Buddhism (Ningen Zen Kyōdan, 2006, 192 pp.); and has co-authored many subtitled video interviews with noted Japanese haiku poets (please visit gendaihaiku.com for these); has been a Judge of the Kusamakura International Haiku Competition; his haiku are widely published (recently in Bones 17, July 2019) and anthologized in: Haiku 21: An Anthology of Contemporary English-language Haiku (Gurga & Metz, Modern Haiku Press, 2011), Haiku in English: The First Hundred Years (Kacian et al, Norton, 2013, 2016), and The Living Haiku Anthology.
